{"id":8009,"date":"2019-11-25T07:21:52","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T07:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/citysecuritymagazine.com\/?p=8009"},"modified":"2020-04-21T15:21:02","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T14:21:02","slug":"security-dog-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citysecuritymagazine.com\/security-management\/guard-dogs\/security-dog-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"Security Dog explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>One Security Dog\u00a0explains his role: it\u2019s a dog\u2019s life<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>How did security dog Marley get into the security profession?\u2008What does this job entail and what advice would he give others looking to follow in his paws?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2008first met Marley one bright sunny summer morning in Canary Wharf just before he started work with his handler John.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB:<\/strong> Marley, how did you initially get into the security profession?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marley<\/strong>: I was born in Hull and as a pup I grew up in Halifax, West Yorkshire with a lovely lady and her children. As I was quite a boisterous young pup with bundles of energy, she soon saw the potential to divert my energy elsewhere. So, she contacted South Yorkshire Police when I was 18 months old, and after passing my Police Accredited Explosive Training, I was transferred to John at ICTS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB<\/strong>: What does your job entail and what is the best thing about your role?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marley:<\/strong> Keeping people safe in Canary Wharf, being part of the Canary Wharf Management Team, networking, meeting new people and developing relationships \u2013 so much so I now have my own business cards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB:<\/strong> You really have your own business cards?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marley:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019ll get John to give you one when we get back to the office.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, I get free private medical, 25 days\u2018 holiday a year, free grooming, an unlimited supply of balls and I&#8217;m chauffeur driven everywhere in an air-conditioned vehicle \u2013 plus, I get to work with humans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB:<\/strong> What has been the highlight of your career?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marley<\/strong>: Passing the Police Accredited Explosive Detection Course with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southyorks.police.uk\">South Yorkshire Police<\/a>,\u00a0 working at cool places such as Canary Wharf, Emirates Stadium, NEC and a variety of red carpet events where I have met many celebrities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB:<\/strong> What skills do you believe are important in your role?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marley:<\/strong> You need to be dedicated, have stamina, combined with a nose for the business and the ability to achieve something humans can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB:<\/strong> How does technology support you in your role?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marley:<\/strong> I&#8217;m microchipped, which provides an audit trail of my training and confirms my authenticity, plus John also helps me with his radio, body cam and link to the control centre\/CCTV.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB:<\/strong> What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into the K9 sector?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marley:<\/strong> Be prepared for hard work, early starts, make sure you get the relevant qualifications and have the appetite to develop and learn new things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB:<\/strong> How has your role changed since you first started?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marley:<\/strong> The threat and crime space has changed over the years, so I have needed to adapt and learn new smells\/substances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB:<\/strong> Have you completed your <a href=\"https:\/\/citysecuritymagazine.com\/category\/police-partnerships\/project-griffin\/\">GRIFFIN\/ACT training<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marley:<\/strong> After securing all my relevant K9 qualifications\/certifications I made sure John was equally as well qualified\/licensed.
